About Zanzibar Examinations Council
The statutory body entrusted with the design, administration, and certification of national examinations in Zanzibar.
Our History
The Zanzibar Examinations Council (ZEC) was formally established by Act No. 6 of 2012 of the House of Representatives in Zanzibar. The Act provides the legal mandate for ZEC, whose roles include the following:
- To prescribe assessment standards to be achieved at primary, secondary, and teacher education levels.
- To set and conduct examinations based on the relevant curricula.
- To monitor the assessment system at both school and teacher training college levels.
- To conduct research in collaboration with local, regional, and international professional bodies.
- To evaluate education programmes.

Mission: To provide valid and reliable educational assessment for primary, secondary, and teacher education examinations, enhancing student learning to meet national education standards.
